2-Ethylhexyl Acetate Definition

2-Ethylhexyl acetate or iso-octyl acetate is a solvent used for proteomics research. 2-ethylhexyl acetate is an acetate ester that is hexyl acetate substituted by an ethyl group at position 2. It has a role as a metabolite. It derives from a hexan-1-ol.
iso-octyl acetate Is also known as Acetic acid, 2-ethylhexyl ester; 2-Ethyl-1-hexanol acetate; 2-Ethylhexyl ethanoate; 2-Ethyl-1-hexyl acetate.

2-Ethylhexyl Acetate Applications

  1. 2-Ethylhexyl Acetate is a hydrophobic yet comparatively polar high boiler with good solvent power for cellulose nitrate and many natural and synthetic resins.
  2. It is therefore useful in paint and coating formulations, e. g. for cellulose nitrate paints. Its properties can also be exploited in coatings for brushing on, dip-coating and spraying, and for stove enamels.
  3. The main purpose of adding iso-octyl acetate is to improve flow and film formation. The product is also a good coalescing aid for emulsion paints.
  4. Another application for iso-octyl acetate is as an additive in cleaners and paint removers.
  5. 2-Ethylhexyl acetate is a high boiling point solvent. Its hydrophobic, relatively polar nature makes it a good solvent for nitrocellulose and other resins commonly used in some lacquersNC lacquer emulsionsscreen inks and some enamels to improve flow and film formation.
  6. It has a wide use as a leather industry solvent in dyeing and finishing functions aiding in film formation and flow.
  7. Literature reports its use in fragrance formulations.
  8. It has a coalescing action in emulsion paints where VOC isn’t a driving issue.
  9. Its advantages with film formation and flow brings benefits in use in certain application methods such as brush application, spray and dip-coating methods.
  10. Because of its compatibility with all common solvents, such as alcohols, ketones, glycols and glycol ethers, and aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons it is often used as an additive in cleaners and even in paint stripping systems.

Reactivity Profile

2-Ethylhexyl acetate is an ester. Esters react with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction of esters with caustic solutions. Flammable hydrogen is generated by mixing esters with alkali metals and hydrides. Contact with strong oxidizers may cause vigorous reaction [USCG, 1999].

Health Hazard

Prolonged skin contact may cause irritation.

Fire Hazard

Special Hazards of Combustion Products: Irritating vapors and toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, may be formed when involved in fire.
